This is an exciting year for students. Transitioning into high school is such an important event in the lives of young people. Fortuna High offers special programs to help ease the transition. At the end of the eighth grade year, feeder schools are contacted and Fortuna High counselors set up visits to talk with eighth graders about the high school experience. After that parent night is scheduled for the spring and students are invited to the high school campus in May to take their first campus tour. In the summer before school starts they are invited back to campus again for another tour and a fun half-day of activity with the Link Crew high school students. That day there is a fun barbecue and that night is the freshman dance - their first high school dance experience. After that students and parents are invited to "Back to School" Days for registration activities. Finally all freshmen are ready for the first day of school.
During the freshman year counselors work with students to develop the four year plan. This is a plan of high school classes that plan out all four years and helps the students see what they need to do to accomplish their goals. |
Transition Tips for Freshman Year
The transition to high school can be difficult for some students. Students have to adjust to 6 periods, 6 teachers, the faster pace of high school, and the increase in homework. Here are some tips you may find helpful in adjusting to high school life:
- Come prepared with all supplies including a binder with sections for each subject.
- Sometimes it helps students to have an assignment book, or planner. This way its easier to keep track of homework assignments for each class.
- Sign up with “AERIES” online service to help keep track of your student and to make sure everything is OK and all assignments are current: https://fortunaunionhsd.asp.aeries.net/Student/LoginParent.aspx. You will need a verification number and student perm number that you’ll need to get from the high school office. Also, you’ll need an email account.
- Put aside at least 1 hour per day for homework (even if you don’t have any homework on a particular day, try to get into the habit of reviewing your notes, studying or reading ahead – this will help improve your study habits). Try to keep the same schedule each day to help you get into a routine (example: 4 – 5 p.m. is homework time)
- Get involved! Fortuna High has many activities including sports, clubs, student government.
- Attendance is very important, so you want to be sure to try to schedule all family vacations and trips during the regularly scheduled school vacations.
- If you get behind and are worried about your grades, be sure to access teacher’s gradebooks on the AERIES website.
- Don’t be hesitant to ask for assistance for anything you may need or have questions about. Come by and introduce yourself to your counselor, the office staff and/or anyone else you can think of. We are here to help!
- Take advantage of the tutoring services and study hall available here at the high school. In addition, most teachers are always available for extra assistance outside of regular class hours.
